SANTA CRUZ – Beach Boardwalk Events:
The Amazing Chinese Acrobats,
Jul 13-Aug 21

These spectacular acrobats spin plates, balance atop precariously stacked chairs, maneuver bicycles loaded with acrobats, and perform the
traditional Lion Dance on the Board-walk’s Beach Bandstand. Two free shows daily, Sunday through Thursday, noon and 3pm, and noon and 6pm on Sundays.
Free Friday Night Bands,
Jun 20-Aug 29. These popular concerts on the beach are back with two free shows every Friday night. Popular bands from the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s are a trademark of this annual series. Concert times: 6:30pm and 8:30pm.

Sea Swings, an exhilarating new ride twirls riders past breath-taking ocean views. Also known as a “carousel swing” the family-friendly ride is a perfect fit for the nostalgic Boardwalk. Ride opens summer 2008.

Oakland Tours, through October
. The 52 free, guided, 90-minute walking tours offer a glimpse into Oakland’s past and present while showcasing the city’s changing skyline, landmarks, churches and high-rises. SAN FRANCISCO – Area Events:
Festival of Sail, Jul 23-28
. The Festival of Sail transforms the piers of San Francisco into an international nautical attraction this summer. More than 15 tall ships and other vessels from around the world are expected to visit, including the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle. The 295-foot Eagle is the only active commissioned sailing vessel in the U.S. military service and is home ported at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. The schedule of events will include a parade of sail, dockside tours, concerts, fireworks, wine tasting cruises and educational programs. You can tour the vessels, cruise the bay on an afternoon or evening sail, participate in family boat building competitions, view maritime related exhibits and enjoy three themed “villages” complete with food, crafts, displays and nautical-themed activities along the waterfront from Aquatic Park to Pier 40.

Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival, Aug 22-24. This inaugural event will feature more than 40 artists and groups, including Radiohead, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Jack Johnson. The festival will take place in around the Polo Field, Speedway and Lindley Meadows in Golden Gate Park. The area that includes Golden Gate Park was known as the Outside Lands in the mid-1800s, and much of it was barren uninhabitable land. In the early 1870s work began to transform 1,000-plus acres into Golden Gate Park, a place of recreation and re-creation. Today it is the third most-visited park in the U.S. and draws more than 13 million visitors annually. General admission tickets for the three-day festival are $225.50 (plus applicable service fees and delivery charges); pending availability single tickets may be released on a later date and day-of-festival tickets sold on show days.

2008 California State Yo-Yo Championships, Sep 6. All wound up with nothing to do? Swing by the Exploratorium and meet national and world Yo-Yo Champions. See and learn amazing tricks, like “Atom Smasher,” “Boingy Boingy,” and “Walk the Dog”. This event is included in the price of admission to the Exploratorium.

Registration is open to the public and hours are 10am-4pm. Winners will qualify for next year’s regional tournament. The Exploratorium is located at the Palace of Fine Arts, 3601 Lyon Street.

San Francisco Museum of
Modern Art, Select Exhibitions:
Frida Kahlo, Jun 14-Sep 28
. Organized by world-renowned Frida Kahlo biographer and art historian Hayden Herrera, the presentation will include approximately 50 paintings from the beginning of Kahlo’s career in 1926 to her death in 1954. While concentrating on Kahlo’s hauntingly seductive and often brutal self-portraits, the exhibition also will include those particular portraits and still-life paintings that amplify her sense of identity.

The Art of Lee Miller, Jul 1-Sep 14. Celebrating the life and career of one of the most original and creative photographic artists of the 20th century, this exhibition brings together some of the greatest images both by and of Miller, and features several works never before exhibited or published.

Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park:
Full Moon Madness, Jul 19, Aug 16
. Join a moonlit guided tour of the redwoods and moon gaze through telescopes. Activities include music, multi-media presentation about the park’s nocturnal critters, crafts for kids and refreshments. Hours: 6pm-9pm.

Ohlone Day, Sep 20. See traditional dancers and Ohlone demonstrators who share traditional basketry, songs, stories, tools, musical instruments, soap root brushes, language and history. You can throw an atlatl, make a tule craft, play Ohlone games, and try your hand at fire making. Hours: 10am-4pm.
The main entrance to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park is located off of Highway 9 in Felton.

Big Basin Redwoods State Park:
Tales of the Basin Storytelling Weekend Event, Jul 25-27
. The oral tradition comes to life with the ancient redwood forest as a backdrop. Events of this weekend include Big Basin Nature Trails for children of all ages, guided walks that spin a yarn along the trail and a Storyteller Showcase in the historic Campfire Center. Presented in collaboration with South Bay Storytellers.
Big Basin Founders’ Day and Redwood Jubilee, Sep 27. Honor those who have shaped the character of Big Basin over the past 104 years. Revel in the beauty of the majestic old growth redwoods and celebrate the park’s wild heritage with a melodrama, music, historic hikes and games for kids. Hours: 10am-8pm.

Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park:
Mission Adobe Day, Sep 13
. Make your own hand-dipped candle, see outdoor cooking methods and make your own tortillas, shape an adobe brick, and hear tales of the past. This hands-on living history day gives visitors a chance to explore and connect with the history of Santa Cruz’s oldest structure, built by Native American labor during the waning days of Mission Santa Cruz’s existence. Designed as native worker “family apartments”, it is the only original of its kind in California today. Hours: 12pm-4pm. The park is located off Mission Street at 144 School Street.

Natural Bridges State Beach: Welcome Back Monarchs Day, Oct 12. A joyful, monarch-filled day where you can help welcome the monarchs back to this park, their over-wintering habitat. Events include arts and crafts, active games for kids, music by the 5M’s (the mostly mediocre musical monarch mariposas), hand-cranked ‘monarch’ ice cream (pumpkin), information and action booths as well as more about monarch butterflies and how-to’s for a butterfly garden. Hours: 10am-4pm.
The park is located at the end of West Cliff Drive at the north end of Santa Cruz.
