ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK
ARIZONA'S MYTHIC LANDSCAPE

As we hiked along the wooded trailleading from the Glacier Gorge trailhead, the sound of rushing, splashing water, and a touch of humidity told us we were near. We joined a small group of hikers who arrived ahead of us and stood mesmerized by the sight of Alberta Falls. Glacier Creek swirled in a sinuous “S” curve across granite bedrock, then gushed, as if out of a flume, into a frothing, tumbling cascade, splashing onto boulders below. After clambering over massive rocks seeking new views of the cascade, we settled on one with a good vantage point, then nibbled on a snack of fruit, cheese and crackers while our eyes feasted on the falls.

Among the waterfalls we saw during our summer visit to Rocky Mountain National Park, Alberta Falls was our favorite. But waterfalls weren’t the only scenic jewels to captivate us. Located about 80 miles northwest of Denver, Colorado, the park encompasses 416 square miles of expansive mountain vistas, abundant wildlife...
