BIOSPHERE 2
-Where Science Lives

Located in Oracle Arizona about 35 minutes north of Tucson is Biosphere 2, a laboratory for controlled
scientific studies, an arena for scientific
discussion, and a far-reaching public education center.
It was built in 1984 by Edward Bass and Margaret Augustine, CEOs of Decisions Investment Corporation. The design of Biosphere was the invention of John Allen a scientist who later was made chairman and head of research at the facility. Biosphere 2 was eventually opened to the public in 1990.

The original concept of Biosphere 2 was to reproduce a closed system like the earth’s atmosphere that could be self-sustaining where all of the air, water, and food needed to survive is recycled and grown. Never before had scientists been able to reproduce the exact conditions of a closed atmospheric system like planet earth. This gave scientists an opportunity to gain insights into how earth’s atmosphere really works.
