EXPERIENCE THE UNDERSEA WITHOUT GETTING WET Have you ever heard of Gilgamesh? He was a mythological hero-king in ancient Sumer (650 B.C. and now part of southern Iraq). Legend tells of how the mythical Gilgamesh used rocks bound to his feet to retrieve an undersea plant that would provide him eternal life. The Gilgamesh legend is one of the first references to undersea experiences by humans – albeit mythical. (More on Gilgamesh later.) Contemporary U.S. Navy diving and research programs continue to push the limits of technology and human endurance to improve both diver safety and underwater operational capabilities. The Naval Undersea Museum located near Keyport, WA offers an excellent opportunity to expand or open ones understanding of underwater research, submarine technology, and torpedoes.
