Carpenteria Celebrates Suppose someone held a celebration to spotlight a particularly nutritious fruit. Think anyone would show up? Unless it was a KiwiFest with free air to New Zealand, probably not. Yet, every year, during the first weekend in October, more than 100,000 folks trod downtown Carpinteria to pay homage to the totally nutritious, absolutely delicious, very un-fruitlike avocado! For 21 years, the Santa Barbara County city of Carpinteria, California, devotes three delightful autumn days to salute its top export, the Hass Avocado. And if ever a town had reason to brag about its home-grown produce, this one sure does. Annually, the farms in the Carpinteria area grow approximately 5,000 to 10,000 tons of the black-skinned fruit. In fact, Santa Barbara is the 3rd largest avocado producer in North America! Certainly reason to toot one’s own horn...
